Joseph Smith "approached the door, and pulling the six-shooter left by Borhter Wheelock from his pocket, opened the door slightly, and snapped the pistol six successive times; only three barrels, however, were discharged. I afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, two of whom, I am informed, died... and while Brother Joseph was firing the pistol, I stood close behind him." [1]

Richard Bushmen, a Mormon, admits that Joseph Smith had and shot a gun. [2]

“I am going like a lamb to the slaughter; but I am calm as a summer’s morning; I have a conscience void of offense towards God, and towards all men.” ( D&C 135:4.)

[edit] Arguments for Smith as a matryr

Some LDS claim that the History of the Church says, "and, unarmed as we were" [3] implies that Smith didn't have a gun.

[edit] Quotes

“When the enemy surrounded the jail, rushed up the stairway, and killed Hyrum Smith, Joseph stood at the open window, his martyr-cry being these words, ‘O Lord My God!’ This was not the beginning of a prayer, because Joseph did not pray in that manner. This brave, young man who knew that death was near, started to repeat the distress signal of the Masons, expecting thereby to gain the protection its members are pledged to give a brother in distress” (E. Cecil McGavin, Mormonism and Masonry, p.17).

“In 1878, Zina D. Huntington Young said of this theme, ‘I am the daughter of a Master Mason; I am the widow of the Master Mason who, when leaping from the window of Carthage Jail, pierced with bullets, made the Masonic sign of distress, but those signs were not heeded except by the God of Heaven” (E. Cecil McGavin, Mormonism and Masonry, p.17).
